April - Save the frogs!

Thanks to Jack for giving us a great mission this month! He had learned of a problem with a fungus that is spreading rapidly among the frog population, some scientists call it "the most infectious disease ever recorded among vertebrates." It is called the chytrid fungus and is killing many of the world's frogs. So we met with a naturalist at the Ernie Miller Nature Center and learned about the amphibians that reside there and she gave us information on the chytrid fungus and how it affects frogs. Fortunately, we learned that our frogs in Kansas have not been infected yet. We also took a nature walk and saw many of natures wonders, including preying mantis nests, frogs of all sorts, insects galore, and who could forget the "circus turtles". Our guide was fantastic and the kids loved this activity! It was a great time and we collected $110 to donate to the park to help keep their amphibian population thriving.

Everyone enjoyed looking for the frogs. Thankfully, none of the little ones fell in. We thank the Snyder, Behm, Houlahan, and Spanel families for their contributions and to Jack for the great idea!
